INSTITUTIONAL BETRAYAL
We provide advanced trauma-specific education, professional training, immersive retreats, and direct care rooted in a non-pathologizing understanding of trauma through the lens of the Trauma Response Syndrome Model™. Our work centers on the One Planet Healing Paradigm, Safety in Healing, and lived experience, while also addressing institutional betrayal within healing environments.
INSTITUTIONAL BETRAYAL
Institutional betrayal occurs when a trusted organization or system harms an individual who depends on it or fails to prevent and properly respond to wrongdoing committed within its context.
-Jennifer Freyd, Ph.D.
EXAMPLES OF INSTITUTIONAL BETRAYAL:
- Healthcare: lack of trauma-specific treatment approaches within healthcare and mental health systems and alternative medicine.
- Academia: failure to acknowledge how trauma impacts learning and to provide appropriate accommodations.
- Criminal Justice: failure to provide trauma-specific restorative justice opportunities.
- Organized Religion: the power dynamics within some religious organizations create a lack of accountability and unsafe environments.
- Workplace: people are financially dependent on the resources provided by their employer and feel unable to voice when they are experiencing trauma in the workplace.
